Varistor as a Surge Protection Device for Electronic Equipments

Abstract

This paper is aimed at presenting a design of a varistor-based protection circuit for load-connected electronic equipment. The varistor I-V characteristics are described-for the first time- in five regions. Not only the protection-circuit parameters but also the varistor parameters are determined according the load being protected. Because of the nonlinearity of the protection circuit, the describing equations for load and varistor currents and voltages are solved numerically. Different waveforms of the input voltage with and without surge superimposed on the normal operating voltage are investigated. In all cases, the protection circuit has limited the load voltage to a safe vaIue irrespective of how high the input voltage with the superimposed surge.

چکیده
هدف این مقاله ارائه ی طرح مدار محافظ مبتنی بر وریستور برای لوازم الکترونیکی متصل به بار می باشد. مشخصه های وریستور آی - وی برای اولین بار در پنج منطقه توصیف می شوند. نه تنها پارامترهای مدار محافظ بلکه همچنین پارامترهای وریستور با توجه به باری که حفاظت می شود، تعیین می شوند. بعلت غیرخطی بودن مدار محافظ، معادلات توصیفی برای بار و جریان های وریستور و ولتاژها بطور عددی حل می شوند. شکل موج های مختلف ولتاژ ورودی با و بدون نوسان برق اعمال شده روی ولتاژ اجرایی نرمال مورد بررسی قرار می گیرند. در تمام موارد، مدار محافظ، ولتاژ بار را تا یک مقدار امن صرفنظر از میزان بالا بودن ولتاژ ورودی با نوسان برق اعمال شده محدود ساخته است .
